Between the server itself and the Internet there are a pair of firewalls to protect the server, they perform a number of services and one of the reasons there are two is so that if one fails the other picks up the slack...

Unfortunately, when we had the outage what had happened is the nature of their failure left all the networking in an operational state but the part of the routers that actually moved the data around was not working on one unit - end result was no traffic and nothing keeping it all working.

Rebooting the routers cured the problem after I alerted their out of hours engineers.

To help things for the future, the ISP will be putting in place additional monitoring capabilities so that if it happens again they will be notified immediately and can take corrective action promptly.
